Fifth Sunday after Epiphany
February 4, 2007
Bulletin
Order of Worship
9:30 a.m. – Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

A journey, years long, has brought each of you
through thick and thin to this moment in time…
God speaks…The words are incarnate in the flesh and blood
of ourselves and of our footsore and sacred journeys.
             — Frederick Buechner

Listen…
Prelude “Un Canto Per la Pace” by Roger Kellaway

Invocation “Contemplation” by McCoy Tyner
Call to Worship Katie Vigilante
Leader: God whispers your name, an invitation just for you—God is still speaking: come and worship.
People: You and me, all of us—young, old, sister, brother, cousin, friend, parent, child.
Leader: Again and again, God’s invitation is extended— God is still speaking: come and worship.
People: You and me, all of us—the proud and the strong, the lost and the searching, the joyous and the sad.
Leader: From a whisper to a shout, God’s invitation echoes— God is still speaking: come and worship.
People: You and me, all of us—word-arrangers and finger-painters, rope-jumpers and slow-walkers, belly-laughers and soul-singers.
Leader: Here in this place, the Light is shining, joy is brimming, and God is still speaking, beckoning, calling—come and worship.
People: You and me, each and every one of us. Here and now the journey begins anew!

Hymn “Praise to God” Japanese Sakura Melody

Praise to God, praise to God for the greenness of the trees,
For the beauty of the flowers, for the blessing of the sky,
For the greatness of the sea.
Praise to God, praise to God, now and forevermore.

Thanks to God, thanks to God, for the gift of friends in Christ,
For the church our house of faith, for the gift of wondrous love,
For the gift of endless grace.
Thanks to God, thanks to God, now and forevermore.

Sing to God, sing to God for the grace of Jesus Christ,
For the love of parent God, for the comfort and the strength,
      Of the Spirit, holy God.
Sing to God, sing to God, now and forevermore.

Your Life is Happening…
Grace Note “The Place God Calls You” by Frederick Buechner
Prayer for Becoming
Holy God, you forever beckon us to draw near, forever call us to travel on your road of love seeking the source of our deep gladness as we encounter the hungers of the world. Yet we often choose the easy pathways intent on maintaining the status quo, afraid to rock the boat, often unwilling to take decisive action. We are hesitant to step forward into the unknown and instead cling to the old ways of safety and security. Loving God, help us to surrender to your Spirit and offer our lives to each other in this risky vocation called life. Amen.
Passing the Peace
Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound,
that saved and set me free.
I once was lost but now am found,
was blind but now I see.
A Story for Children “Give me a Clean Heart” by Margaret Douroux
Give me a clean heart, so I may serve you
God fill my heart so that I may be used by you.
For I’m not worthy of all these blessings
Give me a clean heart and I’ll follow you.

Hymn “This Little Light of Mine” African American Spiritual

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…

Sharing Jesus’ light, I’m gonna let it shine…
Everywhere I go, I’m gonna let it shine…

Postlude “Bosphorus Blues”
The Oîkos Ensemble
leads us today as a trio…
Arianna Aerie, vocalist
Rev. Clifford Aerie, saxophone
Dr. Christopher Bakriges, piano
Oîkos is the Greek New testament word translated as "dwelling place," or "house." At its biblical center is the sense of one who manages a household and, by extension, refers to the role of a "steward." It is at the root of the words economy, ecology and ecu-menical-connoting a relational concept of embracing God's bless-ings of bounty, the environment, and human relationships. As an ensemble, Oîkos strives to share what it means to be children of the Holy One-blessed by God's providence, sensitive to the Creator's gift of our fragile world, and committed to embracing the diversity of our sisters and brothers in the global family. We thank you for letting us share in worship with you.

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE: The Communications Committee strives to expand the awareness of the Church within the community as well as promote and enhance communications within the church and its membership. One major role which the Committee has taken on is the scheduling, production and filming of the Channel 36 TV show “The Devil’s Advocate.” This show, hosted by Rev. Rush, is produced by Brian Angle and two of the camera operators are Ed Walter and Richard Avery, each a member of the Committee.

The Committee oversees newspaper ads placed locally for holidays and church events, and regularly releases press announcements related to Church sponsored events such as “The Devil’s Advocate,” music programs and other speakers.

Within Christ Church, the Committee participates in maintaining and developing the Christ Church website with Sermons and Bulletins posted weekly, as well as monthly minutes from meetings of the E-Board and various committees. Web pages and e-mail lists are maintained for all committee and boards of the Church.

The Committee also provides technical support to the office staff of the church with respect to the preparation and distribution of publications, such as the weekly Bulletin. The Committee is in the process of reviewing and redesigning the website.
